Spartanburg, S.C. – Upstate men's soccer competed at home for the first time in the 2024 season. The home opener was a match-up against East Tennessee State University, with the Spartans earning a 2-0 shutout victory. This win was the first one over ETSU in program history.
Upstate started the match quickly, with the first shot by
Anthony Cox occurring just over a minute into play. After multiple shot attempts by the Spartans, it was
Adrian Panaite who finally found the back of the net, scoring the first goal of the 2024 season. The goal was scored off a perfectly timed pass from
Dario Stadler, who finished the night with an assist and two shots. Eight minutes into the second half, the Spartans scored again, with freshman
Shayne Abrams connecting on a pass from Panaite. He earned a new season-high in shots, shots on goal, goals, and assists, leading the team in all categories except goals. Goalkeeper
Cooper Jennings earned his first shutout of the season, totaling three saves.
