Women's Soccer Drops Road Battle With the Paladins

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The USC Upstate women's soccer team finished the week with a 2-0 loss on the road to the Paladins of Furman University after both teams went scoreless through the first half.  

Upstate found itself on defense early into the match as Furman's offense recorded four shots, two of which were on target, in the first 12 minutes. Meghan Groah made her third consecutive start of the season in the net for Upstate. Groah not only recorded three saves in the first half but also held the Paladins scoreless through the first 45 minutes, despite facing six shots. Nya Baccelli led the Spartans' offense with the lone shot in the first half for the Spartans.  

Coming out of the halftime break, Upstate continued to try to fend off Furman's attackers as the Paladins fired off the first two shots of the second half. Baccelli once again tried to kick start Upstate's offense with an attempt on net but was stopped by Furman's goalkeeper. Paige Armstrong claimed Upstate's final shot of the match and forced the Paladins goalkeeper to make a save to keep the Spartans off the board. Groah finished the game with seven saves on 19 shots faced.

How It Happened    

  • 5'- The Paladins fired the first shot of the contest but it was off target for n Upstate goal kick.  

  • 6'- Nieva Gaither sent Furman's first shot on goal towards the lower right corner of the net but Meghan Groah made her first save of the game.  

  • 34'- Nya Baccelli had the Spartans' lone shot in the first half but it was off target. 

  • 41'- Bella Murphy recorded the final shot of the first half by missed the frame.  

  • At halftime, Upstate led Furman in saves (3-0), but trailed in shots (6-1) and corner kicks (5-0). 

  • 49'- Baccelli once fired one off, this time on target towards the Paladins' goal but Addison Corn made her first save of the half.  

  • 62'- A penalty kick awarded to the Paladins resulted in Furman's first goal of the match (1-0).  

  • 64'- Groah recorded another save in the 64th minute in an attempt to try to hold the Paladins to one goal.  

  • 67'- Maddie Massie scored Furman's second goal after connecting with Valentina Mosquera and Ashlyn Goila.  

  • 85'- Murphy had Furman's final shot on goal of the game, where she delivered Meghan Groah her final save of the match.  

  • At the final whistle, Upstate led in saves (7-2), but trailed in shots (19-3), shots on goal (9-2), and corner kicks (9-0).  

Notable    

  • Meghan Groah tied her season-high for saves with seven.  

  • The last time Upstate lost to Furman was in August of 2017 (6-1).  

  • Upstate is now 2-2 on the road.
