SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Taking the pitch for an afternoon Big South Conference showdown, Upstate Men's Soccer battled with Gardner-Webb University where it came down to the wire with the Runnin' Bulldogs overcoming the Spartans' quick start.
Opening the first minute, the Spartans got off to a quick start with the display of the Vitalis Takawira Jr. to Oskar Kaufmann connection 27 seconds into the match. Leading 1-0, Gardner-Webb responded with a goal of their own to bring the momentum back on their side. As Upstate looked to adjust to the new game, the Runnin' Bulldogs added their second goal at the 18th minute, taking the lead, 2-1. The Spartans looked to continue their offensive firepower with multiple shots on goal, but Gardner-Webb was able to hold their lead going into the break. The intensity in the second half picked up with both opponents continuing to take control of the match, getting their offense going. The Spartans looked to convert on multiple opportunities where in response the Runnin' Bulldogs held the lead overcoming the Spartans.
