SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Hosting Gardner-Webb for another Big South match-up, USC Upstate women's soccer played a close contest against the Runnin' Bulldogs but fell short 1-0.
The Spartans claimed the first shot of the match off the foot of
Dara Russo. She led the Spartans in shots with six, four of which were on goal. Gardner-Webb found the back of the net in the 18
th minute of play.
Paige Armstrong put up four shots, two on target, followed by
Maddy DeCola with four shots of her own.

How It Happened
1st Half: Taking the first shot of the match six minutes in was Upstate's own
Dara Russo. Gardner-Webb answered with back-to-back shots. Five minutes later,
Adrianna Pepe took aim at the goal, but her shot was saved by the keeper. The Runnin' Bulldogs netted the lone goal in 18
th minute.
Marley Gerber made two saves before the end of the half to keep the score within one.
2nd Half: Paige Armstrong took the first shot of the half. The Spartans were able to draw a foul inside the box, leading to a penalty kick, but it was saved by the Gardner-Webb keeper.
Marley Gerber made her final save of the evening in the 61
st minute. Both teams traded shots the rest of the match.
