SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Looking to begin its three-game weekend set on a high note, USC Upstate baseball attempted a ninth-inning comeback as it looked to shrug off a big inning from UMass Lowell, scratching a pair in the final frame before succumbing 11-8 in Friday night's series opener at Cleveland S. Harley Park. A seven-run fifth inning from the River Hawks proved the difference in the contest.
For the third straight game and fifth time during the 2025 campaign, Upstate pounded out double-digit hits, collecting 17 Friday afternoon as for the second consecutive outing all nine members of the team's starting lineup picked up at least one hit. Six of the nine regulars notched multi-hit games headed by sophomore shortstop
Vance Sheahan's four-hit effort, his team-leading fifth multi-hit game—third with four or more hits.
Sheahan's four-hit outing extended his hitting streak to six as he's reeled off three straight multi-hit games, legging out at least one double in the three games. He tied a career-high with two doubles while stealing a pair of bases against UMass Lowell. Sophomore designated hitter
Tyler Lang, junior catcher
Preston Lucas, redshirt sophomore centerfielder
Scott Newman, redshirt junior second baseman
Alex Ritzer, and junior leftfielder
Cayden Wotipka each joined Sheahan with a multi-hit game, collecting two hits apiece.

How It Happened
- T1: Beginning the afternoon's scoring, UMass Lowell hung the first two runs of the day on the board behind a two-run blast to right-center from Carlos Martinez.
- B2: Getting one of its runs back, Upstate loaded the bases behind three singles before Preston Lucas offered a sac fly to left, scoring Jake Armsey.
- B3: Fighting back to take the lead, the Spartans used a pair of productive outs to scratch a pair of runs, picking up said runs being an RBI groundout to second from Johnny Sweeney and a sac fly from Armsey.
- B4: Extending the team's advantage, Upstate tacked on two additional runs in the fourth frame. The first followed three straight one-out singles with Scott Newman picking up the RBI. Wylie Waters collected the second with a single through the left side.
- T5: Answering the Spartans' three straight scoring innings, the River Hawks jumped on Upstate for seven runs in the stanza. A dropped foul ball prolonged the inning for UMass Lowell, leading to a pair of two-run homers in the inning.
- T7: A fourth two-run homer, the second of the day off the bat of Alex Luccini to push the lead to seven in favor of the River Hawks.
- B7: Picking up one of its surrendered runs, Upstate tallied a single run in the home half of the seventh as Cayden Wotipka ripped a double into the leftfield corner.
- B9: Setting the tone for the team's attempted comeback, Vance Sheahan knocked in a pair with a double over the head of the rightfielder, plating Lucas and Alex Ritzer.
Notable
- Recording four hits to lead the Spartans' Friday, Vance Sheahan recorded his third game of the season with four or more hits. Last season, one Spartan, Grant Sherrod, recorded three or more four-plus-hit contests, doing so in 60 games in comparison to Sheahan's eight games.
- Friday's game against UMass Lowell marked the first contest of the 2025 season to see Upstate not homer, snapping a seven-game home runs streak.
