Baseball's Late-Inning Comeback Falls Short in Midweek Finale at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – Seeking a sweep of its first multi-game midweek series of the season, USC Upstate baseball offered another late-inning comeback bid, taking the lead late before seeing Stetson battle its way back to even the midweek set with a 9-7 win Wednesday at Melching Field at Conrad Park, scoring in the home half of the seventh to turn back the Spartans.

Trailing 5-1 entering the seventh inning, Upstate fashioned its second six-run inning of the series. The Spartans' first two tallies came as Stetson threw away a sac bunt attempt from junior catcher Preston Lucas. Redshirt sophomore centerfielder Scott Newman drove home the next run with a single through the right side before senior designated hitter Johnny Sweeney delivered the lead with a three-run homer off the video board in right.

Newman and redshirt junior third baseman Jake Armsey led Upstate with two hits apiece with Sweeney pacing the team with three RBI. Reaching all four times he stepped to the plate Wednesday, redshirt junior rightfielder Scott Campbell tied the program record for HBP in a game—the first since 2023—taking three HBP on the day.

How It Happened
  • T2: Drawing the first of his three HBP of the day, Scott Campbell drove in the day's first run, taking his HBP with the bases loaded.
  • B3: Changing the lead for the first time, Stetson gained the advantage as Lorenzo Meola doubled off the wall in center, sending home two.
  • B5: The Hatters added two tallies to their lead in the fifth behind a Foster Apple single back through the middle.
  • B6: Stetson's Salvador Alvarez added a run of insurance with a solo shot to left in the sixth.
  • T7: For the second time this week, Upstate used a six-run frame to wrangle the lead from the Hatters. A sac bunt and subsequent throwing error from Stetson resulted in the first two tallies before a Scott Newman single pulled the Spartans within one. Delivering the lead, Johnny Sweeney crushed a three-run shot of the videoboard in right.
  • B7: Answering the Spartans, Stetson slugged a three-run homer of its own as Landon Russell gave the Hatters the lead.
  • B8: Stetson scored the final run of the afternoon on a Meola single to right, his third RBI of the game.

Notable
  • Drawing three HBP Wednesday, Scott Campbell became the fifth player in program history to register three hit-by-pitch in a single game. He's the first since J.D. Brock versus Princeton on March 19, 2023, to accomplish the feat, becoming the third player in the program's Division I era (2007-pres.) with the mark.
