Amp Phillips Strikes Out Career-High Seven in Relief as Baseball Sees Late-Inning Comeback Attempt Fall Short Versus Radford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Taking the field Saturday with a chance to even its first Big South Conference series of the 2025 season, USC Upstate baseball's relief pitching delivered an opportunity to offer another late-inning comeback, but the Spartans couldn't cash in during the final innings, dropping a 9-6 decision to Radford at Cleveland S. Harley Park.

Taking over on the bump as Upstate faced a 7-3 deficit with one out in the fourth inning, redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Amp Phillips proceeded to strike out both batters he faced to end the frame. He finished his outing tossing a career-long 5.0 innings and striking out a career-best seven as he allowed just two runs, allowing the Spartans a chance to fashion their comeback attempt.

At the plate, sophomore catcher Tyler Lang tied his career-high with a team-best three hits, one of three multi-hit games by Spartans Saturday with redshirt junior rightfielder Scott Campbell and redshirt freshman leftfielder Henry Zenor recording two hits apiece. Lang and redshirt sophomore centerfielder Scott Newman both homered as Newman's blast marked his third of the series, the two-run shot giving him the team's lone multi-RBI effort.

How It Happened
  • T1: Hitting the first of its four homers on the day, Radford slugged a pair of long balls in the opening frame, getting a three-run shot from James Ward and a solo homer from Tyler Sparrer.
  • B1: Getting a pair of its runs back, Scott Newman exited the yard to straightaway center in his first at-bat for the second straight day, lacing a two-run shot Saturday.
  • T3: Tacking on to their lead, the Highlanders hung another two on the board behind Mason Self's two-run blast.
  • B3: Sneaking a ball through the infield and into centerfield, Scott Campbell produced the game's first run scored without a home run, driving home Henry Zenor from second.
  • T4: Radford answered the Spartans' run from the prior half-inning with a Jhonkeanu Perez RBI single to center.
  • T5: Adding to their lead, the Highlanders hung another on the board with Ward's second homer of the day, a solo shot.
  • B5: Upstate scored a pair in the fifth, beginning with a solo homer from Tyler Lang to lead off the frame. Later in the inning and with the bases loaded, the Spartans added another as Zenor crossed the plate as Campbell slid in just ahead of a throw at third on a fielder's choice to short.
  • B8: Picking up an RBI after scoring twice, Zenor ripped an RBI single through the right side.
  • T9: Employing a suicide squeeze with runners on the corner, Radford added a run of insurance in the ninth, wrapping the day's scoring.
