Huge Days from Johnny Sweeney and Chris Torres Lead Baseball to 8-1 Victory and Series Sweep of Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Entering the day with a chance to sweep and carrying a string of 26 unanswered runs into the game, USC Upstate baseball kept its momentum, extending the streak of unanswered runs to 34 as it completed the sweep of Charleston Southern with an 8-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Nielsen Field at CSU Ballpark.

Following redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Amp Phillips strong start from Saturday, sophomore left-handed pitcher Chris Torres did Phillips one better Sunday as he struck out a career-high 10 over 6.0 innings of work. Torres' 10 punchouts—the Spartans' second double-digit strikeout game by a starting pitcher—headlined a day where Upstate's pitching staff struck out 16 with redshirt sophomore righty Max Bianchini and sophomore right-hander Cooper Ellingworth adding four and two strikeouts, respectively.

Continuing a hot stretch at the plate, senior designated hitter Johnny Sweeney put forth another career effort, reaching all five times he stepped to the dish. He ended his day with a career-high-tying three hits for the third time in the series, recording his first career multi-homer game while driving in a career-best five.

How It Happened
  • T1: For the second straight game, Johnny Sweeney picked up an RBI in the first inning. Sunday, he ripped a double inside the first base bag, chasing home Scott Newman from first as the duo recorded back-to-back hits.
  • T3: Adding another pair of RBI to his totals, Sweeney launched the 11th pitch of his second at-bat well over the wall in rightfield.
  • T7: Hammering another ball to deep right, Sweeney picked up his fourth and fifth run driven in with his second homer of the day.
  • T8: Plating the game's first run not driven home by Sweeney, Alex Ritzer picked up an RBI as his bouncer back through the middle was booted by the Buccaneers, allowing Jake Armsey to come down the line and score. Ritzer later raced home to score himself on a wild pitch.
  • T9: Sending a ball bounding back through the middle, Henry Zenor scored Scott Campbell from second with an RBI single.
  • B9: Scoring for the first time since the fourth inning of game one, Charleston Southern put itself on the board behind a gap-splitting double from Blake Edgmon. The Buccaneers added a second tally as a throw got away from the Spartans' first baseman, allowing Edgmon to score.

Notable
  • Striking out a career-high 10, Chris Torres recorded the Spartans' second double-digit strikeout game by a starting pitcher of the 2025 season, following Max Kaplan's 13-strikeout game versus Le Moyne on Feb. 22. The game marked the 24th double-digit strikeout game in the Spartans' Division I era (2007-pres.).
  • The 2025 season is the first to feature multiple pitchers recording a double-digit strikeout game since 2023 when Reese Dutton (11 vs. Cincinnati) and Henry Proger (10 vs. Gardner-Webb) both did so.
  • Upstate's pitching staff's 16 strikeouts versus Charleston Southern are the most by the club since striking out 16 against Longwood on May 10, 2024.
  • Johnny Sweeney's multi-homer game Sunday is the second multi-homer game by a Spartan in 2025, the first since Scott Newman slugged a pair on March 14 versus Radford.
