Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball grinds it out with Longwood in an overtime thriller; the Lancers outduel Upstate in the battle

FARMVILLE, Va. - Rounding out the week, Upstate Men's Basketball traveled to Farmville, Virginia to battle Longwood in Saturday afternoon action where the Lancers overcame the Spartans in overtime with an 82-75 final.  

Karmani Gregory led with 23 points, marking his eighth 20+ point performance on the season. Gregory added three rebounds, one assist, one block, and two steals. Mason Bendinger followed with 19 points shooting 7-for-19 from the field and 2-for-4 from beyond the arc. Following a 19-point performance, Bendinger led Upstate with a new career high of nine rebounds, leading the Spartans. Carmelo Adkins rounded out the double figure scorers with 13 points and eight rebounds being second on the team in rebounds. Longwood outdueled Upstate from beyond the arc shooting 62 percent from beyond the arc, compared to Upstate's 30 percent. The Spartans won the rebounding battle with 41 team rebounds (13 offensive and 28 defensive) to Longwood's 36 rebounds (12 offensive and 24 defensive).

How it Happened 

First Half 

  • Longwood jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first half, but the run was halted by Mason Bendinger's triple and mid-range jumper, cutting their deficit to four.  

  • The Spartans kept the game within reach as Bendinger converted his second three-pointer followed by two layups from Karmani Gregory and Bendinger, tying the game at 24. 

  • Longwood responded with a layup and three free throws to go into the break with a three-point lead. 

Second Half 

  • Longwood opened the second half, bumping their lead to 47-39 with three consecutive triples, putting Upstate in a bind. The Spartans responded with Karmani Gregory adding a three-pointer and another jumper cutting their deficit to four. 

  • Upstate continued their offensive attack, headed by a Carmelo Adkins triple followed by Mason Bendinger converting the and-one layup along with a free throw to take the lead at the 10:34 mark.  

  • As both teams traded scores through the following five minutes, Upstate climbed way back from trailing 61-58 and used their late game trips at the charity stripe, tying it at 69 going into overtime.  

Overtime 

  • Longwood jumped into the extra period, converting another triple regaining the lead by three. 

  • Upstate continued matching Longwood's approach in the paint as Karmani Gregory converted on a triple tying the game at 75 at the 1:33 mark.  

  • The Lancers outscored the Spartans, 7-0 in the final minute, halting the Spartans on their homecourt and ending the game with an 82-75 final.

Following Saturday's battle in Farmville, Virginia, Upstate Men's Basketball travels to Rock Hill, South Carolina for a Thursday night showdown at Winthrop with tipoff scheduled at 6:30 P.M. Eastern time.
