Drew Saberhagen is in his firstseason as an assistant coach for the USC Upstate baseball programin 2013-14.
"I am very excited to have Drewjoin our program," said head coach Matt Fincher. "He has a greatbackground in the game and we are looking forward to having him bea part of what we are trying to accomplish."
A former MLB draftee out of highschool and son of a Cy Young winner, Saberhagen joins the Upstatestaff after spending the last two season with Division II memberNewberry College.
"I like his background in pitchingand I think he is going to be a tremendous asset to the program andwe are looking forward to seeing how our pitchers develop over thenext year."
Saberhagen played his collegecareer at Pepperdine and Western Carolina. As a freshman atPepperdine in 2005 he made his college debut as a reliever.
At WCU, Saberhagen was anAll-Southern Conference first teamer in 2007 as a sophomoreafter leading the league in earned run average at 2.87 andfinishing fourth in the conference with four wins.
Following his collegiate career,Saberhagen played and coached the Alexandria Beetles of theNorthwoods League, where he was the head coach during the 2012season.
Saberhagen was drafted in the 38thround of the 2004 MLB Draft by the Oakland A's out of Calabasas(Calif.) High School. He is the son of 1985 and 1989 MLB AmericanLeague Cy Young award winner Bret Saberhagen.
Saberhagen and his wife, the formerKelsey Murphy, were married on January 5, 2013.
