Gary Lynch is in his fourth year as assistant men's soccer coachat USC Upstate. Previously, he had a standout four-year career withthe Spartans from 2001-04 and has been connected to the Universityfor seven years. Lynch serves as the recruiting coordinator andassists in all aspects of the Upstate men's soccer program. Lynchbegan his coaching career as a graduate assistant at North Floridafrom 2005-06. The Ospreys were in their first year as a member ofNCAA Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference. Previously, NorthFlorida played as a member of the Peach Belt Conference along withUSC Upstate. Lynch returned to Spartanburg to becomn e aassistantcoach at Upstate in 2006. He helped lead the Spartans to an NCAATournament appearance, the program's first since 2003, in his firstseason as assistant coach. The Spartans finished the season with a12-3-3 overall record and a 4-2-1 mark in the Peach BeltConference. Two Spartans earned NSCAA All-America and All-Regionhonors, four were selected to the Peach Belt ConferenceAll-Conference team and two were PBC All-Tournament selections. In2007, he was instrumental as Upstate made the transition to NCAADivision I. Lynch was an NSCAA First Team All-America and PeachBelt Conference Player of the Year selection in 2004 after leadingthe nation in scoring with 3.58 points per game. His 68 points in19 matches broke the Upstate all-time single-season scoring record.He collected eight match-winning goals and finished the season with26 goals and 16 assists to lead the Spartans to a 15-4-0 record.Lynch finished his career tied for sixth on USC Upstate's careerscoring list with 121 points, one of just 14 players in the storiedhistory of the program to reach 100 career points. He ranks in atie for 11th all-time with 38 goals scored and is in solepossession of third place with 45 assists. In addition to beingnamed an All-American in 2004, he also received two All-Region, twoAll-Conference, and two league All-Tournament honors in hisfour-year career. Lynch's play helped lead Upstate to NCAA DivisionII Tournament appearances in 2002 and 2003. He led the Spartans tothe regular season Peach Belt Conference championship in 2003 andthree PBC Tournament titles from 2001-03, as well as an appearancein the tournament final in 2004. A native of Blackburn, England,Lynch was a standout student in the classroom, finishing his fouryears with a 3.7 grade point average. He was named the USC UpstateMale Student-Athlete of the Year in 2005 for excellence inacademics, athletics, and community service. Lynch earned hisNational Diploma in coaching from the NSCAA in 2007 and received amaster's degree in Education at USC Upstate in 2009. He recentlygot engaged to Heather Love earlier this summer.
