Box Score
Spartanburg, S.C. -
Aaron Schoenfeld entered Sunday night's game at USC Upstate without a point on the year. By the end of the game, the freshman from Knoxville had three points after assisting on the first Buccaneer goal and notching the game-winning goal 11 seconds into overtime to lift ETSU to a 2-1 win at County University Soccer Stadium.
ETSU's win was historic as the Buccaneers claimed the school's first-ever A-Sun win. ETSU improved to 5-7-0 overall and 1-4-0 with three points in the A-Sun. Upstate fell to 1-12-0 overall and 0-5-0 in the league.
After a scoreless first half that saw ETSU outshoot Upstate 3-0, Schoenfeld created the first scoring opportunity when he took possession of the ball and played a through ball to Tony Nunes. Nunes was one-on-one with Upstate keeper Peter Davis 16 yards out. Davis charged the play, but Nunes placed a shot to the right of the 6-6 keeper and the ball rolled into the right side of the goal as ETSU opened a 1-0 lead just 24 seconds into the second half. It marked Nunes' first goal of the season.
Upstate put together several scoring opportunities in the second half, taking six shots in the second 45 minutes. Ben Brannan tied the game in the 74th minute on an impressive and improbable goal. Brannan took a back pass 45 yards out and hammered a line drive toward the right side of the goal. The ball stayed on a line and ETSU keeper James Holt jumped to make the save. However, the ball was just high enough that Holt deflected the ball, but the ball skipped into the back of the net as the Spartans drew even at 1-1.
The game headed to overtime and ETSU wasted no time in putting an end to the game. The Buccaneers took the kickoff and went on the attack. Sean Hoek broke free inside the box and hammered a shot toward the middle of the goal where Davis made a tremendous diving save. However, the rebound went directly to Schoenfeld who put the shot in the net of the open goal just 11 seconds into overtime to give ETSU its first A-Sun win in program history.
Davis, who received the start in place of Patrick Regna who is in the hospital battling an infection, was solid in the net for Upstate. He faced seven ETSU shots, four of which were on goal, and made two saves. Holt was also solid in goal for the Buccaneers, despite being hobbled after a collision in the first half. He finished the game with three saves while facing six Upstate shots, four of which were on goal.
