Stetson Takes 5-1 Win Over Upstate

DeLand, Fla. - Stetson scored five unanswered goals and went on for a 5-1 victory over visiting USC Upstate Friday night in A-Sun men's soccer action.

Upstate fell to 2-14-0 overall and 1-7-0 with three points in the A-Sun. The Spartans travel to Fort Myers, Fla., Sunday afternoon for a 12:30 start at Florida Gulf Coast. Stetson improved to 7-6-2 overall and 4-3-1 with 13 points in the league.

Upstate turned in a strong defensive effort in the first half as Stetson placed just one goal in the net before halftime. Gonzalo Demujica scored for the Hatters in the 23rd minute off an assist from Kevin Munz. Demujica scored from 25 yards out.

Stetson took 10 shots in the first half, but placed just two shots on goal as Upstate goalkeeper Peter Davis made a save to hold Stetson to the 1-0 lead at the intermission. Upstate played solid offensively, taking six shots and forcing Hatter keeper Marc Galizia to make three saves to keep the Spartans off the board.

Stetson came out in the second half and quickly turned the tide in the game. The Hatters scored three goals in the first 19 minutes of the second 45 minutes to put the game away. Dan Sackman played a through ball to Fredrik Brustad who made a move around Davis to place a shot into the net for a 2-0 Stetson lead in the 53rd minute.

The Hatters made it a 3-0 lead in the 59th minute on Ryan Corning's goal and increased the lead to 4-0 on Munz's goal in the 64th minute. Stetson increased the advantage to 5-0 on Griffin Gilstrap's goal in the 78th minute.

Upstate cracked the scoreboard with 59 seconds to play in the game when Heine Oehrling scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from Colin Francis.

Stetson outshot Upstate 21-9 for the game, but the Hatters placed just 12 of the shots on goal. Davis made seven saves for the Spartans.
