Upstate Falls In Five To North Florida

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Jovana Lubura (Belgrade, Serbia/New Mexico Military Institute) posted 18 kills and 11 digs for her sixth double-double of the season, but the USC Upstate volleyball team fell to North Florida, 3-2 (31-33, 25-16, 22-25, 25-20, 15-9) in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) posted 10 kills, six digs and four blocks and freshman Kelsie Queen (Blythewood, S.C./Ridge View) added 10 kills and three digs for Upstate (7-18 overall, 3-13 A-Sun). Senior Holly Mauldin (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) added 24 assists and 17 digs. Senior Jenna Leslie (Houston, Texas/Westfield) posted 12 digs, two blocks and four kills and sophomore Megan Healey (St. Louis, Mo./Ursuline Academy) added three aces and 11 digs.

Upstate took a 20-15 lead in the first set and held as big a lead as 24-20 after a kill from Lubura, but three consecutive Lady Osprey kills and a service ace tied the match at 24. The teams traded set points, with North Florida (10-13 overall, 8-8 A-Sun) getting five chances to clinch the match, but a kill from Queen tied the match at 30. An Osprey attack error and a kill from Lubura clinched the set at 33-31.

After the Ospreys took a 25-16 set in the second set, the Spartans were able to take the third set, 25-22. After a kill from Read put the Lady Ospreys up 22-21, a service error and kills from sophomore Sandra Campbell (Orlando, Fla./Pilot Point (Texas)) and Leslie put the Spartans in control as they took the set.

In the fourth set, the Lady Ospreys took a 19-9 lead, but the Spartans were able to renter the game thanks to an 11-4 run to come within three at 23-20 before the Ospreys closed the set with a 25-20 win. With the score tied at three in the fifth set, the Lady Ospreys posted a 3-1 lead to take a 7-4 lead and the Spartans couldn't get closer than two points the rest of the way.

Agata Dawidowicz notched 23 kills and 12 digs to lead the Ospreys while Kaley Read adds 21 kills, nine digs and three blocks. Julie Fye added 60 assists, 11 digs and five aces. Marshay Greenlee posted 10 kills, 13 digs and five bocks. Bary Rasmussen posted eight kills and five digs. Lizzy Manno added 21 digs and Chelsea Rabe posted 20 digs.

The Spartans will spend the rest of the season at home in the Hodge Center, as they start their final four-game A-Sun swing by hosting Lipscomb on Friday at 7 p.m.
