Spartans Drop Conference Road Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The USC Upstate women's soccer team, playing its first conference road match of the season, was up-ended by Lipscomb on Friday night. The Bisons posted three first period goals en route to the 4-1 decision. With the victory Lipscomb improves to 3-8-0 and 1-2-0 in conference play, while Upstate dips to 0-12-0 and 0-3-0 in league play.

The Spartans got on the board first when Athena Lopez scored her first career goal just 55 seconds into the match. Her goal was assisted by Aveann Douglas, the first assist of the season for the junior.

The Spartans maintained a 1-0 advantage until the 16th-minute when Kate Spellman scored to even the match at 1-1. Spellman scored two minutes later to give the Bisons a 2-1 advantage.

Lipscomb tacked on one more first half goal in the 22nd-minute. The goal scored by Meghan McGuire gave the Bisons a 3-1 cushion entering the intermission.

The score would remain 3-1 until the 84th-minute when Lipscomb's Andie Thornton scored to set the final margin at 4-1. Friday night's victory gives the Bisons a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series.

The Spartans were outshot in the match by a 31-7 margin. For the Bisons, 17 of those 31 shots were on target. Upstate manage just four shots on goal during the match. Lipscomb also owned a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior Brittany Daughtry got the start in goal for the Spartans against the Bisons. Daughtry recorded 13 saves in the match, one shy of tying her career high of 14 that she set on Aug. 24 at Furman. Lipscomb keeper Ally Marler recorded three saves during the match.

Upstate will finish its Music City swing on Sunday when they play conference foe Belmont. That match is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
