Upstate Wins Fourth Straight, Claiming Home Opener, 5-2, Over Appalachian State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Senior Leandro Osorio won his 60th career doubles match, joining a select group of three players, helping the Spartans sweep all three doubles matches and lead the team on to a 5-2 win over Appalachian State in the home opener at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Osorio, who joins Stefan Dumitrescu (2003-07, 71 wins) and Jose Luis Reyes (2001-05, 63 wins), helped post a 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles with partner Ramiro Blanco, as they beat the Mountaineers' top pair of Bobby Lake and Alain Humblet, wrapping up a sweep of doubles.

Juniors Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi started off doubles play with an 8-2 win over Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs. Freshman Edgar Rodriguez and junior Jack Roux followed with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Lee Floyd and Phillip Kloc to clinch the points.

Appalachian State tied the match at one, though, with a win at No. 2 singles, but the sixth straight singles win from Blanco at No. 5, a 7-5, 6-4 win over Phillip Kloc.

Upstate won three singles matches to clinch the win, with Rodriguez posting a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 win over Bobby Lake at No. 1 singles, Osorio adding a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win over Alain Humblet at No. 6 and Tori adding a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Lee Floyd at No. 4.

Upstate gets back to action on Sunday when it travels to defending MEAC champions S.C. State for an 11 a.m. contest. The women's team will also face the Bulldogs.
