The USC Upstate women's soccer team dropped its second and final game of the 2009 Border Classic to UT-Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon. The Mocs defeated the Spartans, 8-0, as they were named the winners of the Border Classic with a record of 2-0.
Chattanooga, who defeated Garder-Webb in double -overtime on Friday night, scored in the first six minutes of Sunday's match. Donna-Kay Henry scored in the sixth-minute to give the Mocs a 1-0 advantage. Henry's shot went off the hands of Upstate keeper Sian Jenkins and into the goal.
The Mocs increased their lead to 2-0 when Chelsea Hurst scored on a penalty kick. Upstate would trail 6-0 at the half, three of the six goals for the Mocs came off of the foot of Donna-Kay Henry. Henry would score one of the two second half goals for Chattanooga.
Upstate was outshot in the match 25-16, but held an 11-5 advantage in the second half. For the Mocs, 10 shots were on goal, while Upstate recorded six shots on goal. For the match, Chattanooga owned a 7-2 advantage on corner kicks and a 6-2 advantage in saves.
Dana Hillman led the way for the Spartans in shots, with a total of four and recorded one shot on goal. Five other Spartans recorded a shot on goal in the loss to the Mocs.
Juniors Catherine Nolff and Alyssa Roegner were named to the Border Classic All-Tournament team. Nolff scored in the first five minutes on Friday night against South Carolina State. The goal scored by Nolff was the fourth of her career and the first in 2009. Roegner was credited with the assist on the goal and that is the third assist of her career.
The Spartans will return to action on Wednesday when they make their second trip of the season to Charleston, S.C. Upstate will square off against the College of Charleston at 7:00 p.m. It will be the third consecutive game away from home for the Spartans and the final non-conference road game in 2009 for Upstate.
