The USC Upstate women's soccer team, playing its final non-conference tilt of 2009, fell to visiting Coastal Carolina by a score of 5-1. With the victory on Monday night, the Chanticleers improve to 2-8-1 on the season, while Upstate dips to 0-9-0.
The match began as a defensive battle, but that changed in the 31st minute. Coastal got on the board first when Dana Gentile scored from the right side of the box on an assist by Sarah McPartlan. The Chanticleers added another goal before halftime to set the score at 2-0. Anna Tupy scored on a header that she put past
Upstate keeper Sian Jenkins. Tupy was assisted on the goal by Marissa Terry.
Coastal struck early in the 2nd half to extend its lead to 3-0. Dana Gentile scored her second goal of the match. Her goal from the left side of the box was assisted by Anna Tupy.
In the 54th minute, Upstate posted its lone goal of the match when Kelsey Shinn scored on a free kick after a Chanticleer foul. It was the freshman's first goal of her career.
Coastal tacked on two more goals in the match, one in the 58th minute, with the final goal coming in the 78th minute. Those two goals scored by the Chanticleers set the final margin at 5-1.
Catherine Nolff replaced Sian Jenkins in goal during the second half of the match. Nolff, playing her first collegiate action in goal, recorded two saves. Jenkins recorded four saves on the night, while Upstate was credited with a team save late in the match.
Coastal owned an advantage of 16-4 in total shots for the match. The Chanticleers tallied nine shots in the first period and seven in the second. The Spartans managed just one shot in the first half and totaled three in the second half. Coastal also held a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks, while Upstate owned a 7-2 advantage in saves.
Upstate will return to action on Friday night when they begin Atlantic Sun play. The Spartans will entertain Jacksonville at County University Soccer Stadium with kickoff slated for 7:00 p.m.
