Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. – USC Upstate allowed a
goal in the 87th-minute as Lipscomb claimed a 1-0
victory on Friday night at the Lipscomb Soccer Stadium.
Despite being outshot 11-0 in the first period, Upstate (1-10-3,
0-7-0) held Lipscomb (8-8-0, 4-2-0) scoreless as the two teams
headed to intermission with the match a 0-0 draw.
In the 72nd-minute, the Spartans had a chance to take
a 1-0 lead, but Erkan Yildirim's (Flensburg,
Germany/Flensburg University) shot was saved by Lipscomb goalkeeper
Brent McGee. Timo Foerster (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler
Gymnasium) collected the rebound after the ball got away from
McGee, but his shot was blocked.
In the 73rd-minute, John Kadane (Garland, Texas/John
Paul II) picked up his second yellow card of the match and the
Spartans had to play a man down over the final 18 minutes of the
second half.
The Spartans appeared to keep Lipscomb at bay and send the match
to overtime, but the Bisons broke through in the
87th-minute as Miguel DaSilva put his shot past Spartan
goalkeeper Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) to pick up his
sixth goal of 2010.
Less than a minute later, the Spartans had a chance to tie the
match at 1-1, but Timo Foerster's shot sailed high and
Lipscomb went on to claim the 1-0 win.
Jason McCabe made four saves in the match, while
Lipscomb's Brent McGee recorded three saves. The
Spartans committed 11 fouls in the match, while the Bisons were
called for nine fouls and one offsides penalty. The Bisons
owned a 17-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 margin in shots
on-goal and finished with seven corner kicks, compared to two for
Upstate.
Upstate will return to the pitch on Sunday as they wrap up the
two-match road swing with a match against Belmont. Kick-off
is slated for 12:05 p.m. (CT).
