Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. – Morgan Thomas and
Mindy Quimby each posted 10 kills on the day for USC Upstate, but
Lipscomb held off a spirited Spartan squad to take a 3-1 victory
Saturday afternoon in A-Sun volleyball action. The Lady Bisons won
by scores of 25-13, 25-12, 22-25 and 25-17.
Upstate managed to do something that no other A-Sun school has
done this year and in four straight matches dating back to last
season, win a set from the Lady Bisons. Coming back from the
intermission after the second set, Upstate put the first two games
behind itself and claimed a 25-22 win in the third set. The
Spartans hung tough in the fourth, but an early run in the frame
gave Lipscomb the win and the match, despite the gutsy effort.
Liscomb improved to 15-5 overall and 4-0 in the A-Sun with the
win. Upstate fell to 6-12 overall and 1-3 in the league. The
Spartans return to action Thursday night at Savannah State in
non-conference action.
Lipscomb was dominant in the first two sets. The Lady Bisons hit
.346 in the first frame and .424 in the second, winning by scores
of 25-13 and 25-12. With the score tied at 4-4 in the first set,
Lipscomb ran off six straight points on the serve of Alex Kelly.
After Upstate got as close as 11-7, The Lady Bisons scored six of
the next eight points to take a 17-9 lead and went on for the
victory.
In the second set, Lipscomb scored the first six points and
opened a 14-4 lead. The Lady Bisons' advantage grew to as
much as 14 points before taking the 25-12 win. Meghan Hinemeyer led
the way with five kills in the frame.
Upstate, though, would not go away and was dominant for most of
the third set. The Spartans hit .256 in the frame, its highest
percentage of the night, and limited Lipscomb to .250 hitting.
Trailing 3-0, Upstate rattled off 10 straight points to open a 10-3
lead. Emily Sanders had three consecutive aces and Quimby posted a
pair of kills in the run.
The Spartans maintained a solid advantage, leading 20-10 late in
the set. Lipscomb made a run to get back in the game and cut the
lead to 24-22. However, Thomas collected the game-winning kill to
give the Spartans the set. Katie Downey had five kills in the frame
to lead the Spartans.
Upstate continued to battle in the fourth set. The Spartans
trailed 6-4 when Lipscomb scored six straight points to open a 12-4
lead. Upstate managed to get within six points on two occasions,
but Lipscomb clung to its lead at 20-14. However, the Spartans
would not go down without a fight and cut the lead to 20-16.
Lipscomb scored four consecutive points on Hinemeyer's serve
and took the 25-17 win in the set and the match.
Lipscomb hit .315 for the match with Kelly leading the way with
16 kills. She also posted 17 digs and three assisted blocks.
Hinemeyer added 14 kills and 13 digs, while Ursell finished with 10
kills. Katie Rose totaled five assisted blocks, while Jake Pease
tallied 52 assists.
Quimby and Thomas led Upstate with 10 kills, while Downey added
nine. Megan Healey led the Spartans with 16 digs, while Sanders
collected 35 assists and five aces on the night. Upstate hit .109
for the match.
