– Freshman Francisca
Valderrama posted a dramatic come-from-behind
three-set win over Iesha Holton to lift the USC Upstate women's
tennis team to a 4-3 win over Kennesaw State in the Atlantic Sun
Conference opener for both teams at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex
on Friday afternoon.
Valderrama posted a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3
win over Holton to come-from-behind to lift the Spartans (3-0
overall, 1-0 A-Sun) with her conclusive win at No. 2 singles.
Upstate won a split-decision
doubles point, thanks to an 8-0 win from freshmen Valderrama and
Monica
Pezzotti over Vera Shkundina and Alena Sergeychik at
No. 1 doubles and an 8-2 win by freshman Simona
Cacciuttolo and junior Emilia
Milovanovic at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Cinthya
Lazaro got Upstate out to a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1
win over Agatha Palider at No. 4 singles and Cacciuttolo added a
6-3, 6-1 win over Morgan Carney at No. 3 to give Upstate a 3-0
lead. However, the Owls (3-4 overall, 0-1 A-Sun) fought back into
the match with wins at No. 6, No. 3 and No. 1 to tie the match,
setting up Valderrama's showdown on court No. 2.
The Spartans now return home to
open their Atlantic Sun Conference season on Friday when Kennesaw
State comes to the Upstate Tennis Complex for a 1 p.m. contest.
