SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team defeated Western Illinois 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex.
"Real nice effort from these ladies today," USC Upstate head tennis coach
Tim McLane said. "The conditions were a little crazy having to wait on the rain and then the wind really picked up, but we did a nice job of staying with the brand of tennis we strive for. We did a nice job picking up a quick doubles point and following up with a couple of quick singles wins to cling the team match. From there we were able to finish everything out nicely."
Due to not having enough healthy players in the lineup, Western Illinois was forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles court. The Spartans No. 2 doubles team of
Roberta Armani and
Morgan Valentine quickly took care of their opponents 6-1 to clinch the doubles point. USC Upstate's top doubles tandem of
Elin Hellberg and
Gabriela Cevallos played through the top flight in doubles and came away with a 6-2 win over their opponents.
In singles action the Spartans went up 2-0 in the match after Western Illinois was forced to forfeit the No. 6 singles courts. Both Armani and Valentine were able to pick up quick victories at both the No. 5 and No. 6 flights to clinch the match for the Spartans.
Cevallos picked up a straight sets victory at No. 2 singles and both Hellberg and Jardim picked up an easy first set win over their competition. Hellberg came out slow in the second set and found herself down 4-1 but the junior rallied and pulled a 7-6 victory at the No. 1 singles positon. Jardim also had to fight for every point in the second set before she pulled away with a 7-5 victory at the No. 3 singles court.

The USC Upstate women's tennis team will be back in action next Wednesday, March 18
th against Presbyterian College at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex, first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
