SPARTANBURG, S.C. -
A pair of three-set wins helped Troy come-from-behind to post a 4-3 win over the No. 73 USC Upstate men's tennis team on Saturday at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. Senior Javier Tori led the Spartans with both a singles and doubles win, becoming the first player at Upstate to win 50 doubles matches exclusively in Division I.
The Spartans (2-4 overall) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. After a loss at No. 3 doubles, the Spartans fought back with Tori and fellow senior Renzo Airaldi posting an 8-6 win over Luis Grangeiro and Silva at No. 1. Sophomores Edgar Rodriguez and Ramiro Blanco clinched the point with a 9-77 win over Branko Weber and Xavier Masson at No. 2.
Tori kept pace, giving Upstate a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, but losses at No. 1 and No. 4 tied the match. Guilherme Sahadi gave the Trojans (4-2 overall) a 3-2 lead with a three-set win over Blanco. Senior Jack Roux tied the match at 3 with his own three-set win for the Spartans, beating Anas Rouchadi, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. However, a three-set loss by Rodriguez at No. 2 clinched the match for the Trojans.
The Spartans have little time to reflect on the tough defeat as they face another tough opponent in Elon, who was ranked all the way through Feb. 4. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
