ELON, N.C. –
Both freshman Simona Cacciuttolo and junior
Emilia Milovanovic fell in super-set tiebreakers
and Cinthya Lazaro fell in three sets, but that
was as close as the USC Upstate women's tennis team could get
to win on Sunday afternoon at Elon, as the Fighting Phoenix handed
USC Upstate its first loss of the year.
The Phoenix (7-3 overall) won the
split-decision doubles point, taking the No. 1 match before Lazaro
and sophomore Ana-Sofia Camberos posted an 8-3 win
over Paige Kensrue and Daleen Kloppers. At No. 3, the Phoenix took
an 8-6 win to earn the point.
In singles play, the Phoenix won
three two-set matches to take the match, but Upstate looked poised
to cut into the lead, as Lazaro won her first set 6-3 before
falling 6-3 in the second and third sets to Lauren Sessoms at No.
5. Milovanovic also took her first set, 5-7, before falling 6-4 in
the second set and dropping the super-set tiebreaker, 10-7, to
Laura Graybill at No. 6. At No. 3, Cacciuttolo fell in the first
set, 6-2, before beating Elisa Simonetti, 6-4, in the second set.
However, Simonetti won the tiebreaker, 10-3, to take the match.
The Spartans will continue their
A-Sun season when Mercer comes to the USC Upstate Tennis Complex
for a 1 p.m. match on Saturday.
