Spartans Down Bulldogs, 5-2, For Third Straight Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Three doubles wins helped set the tone as the USC Upstate men's tennis team won its third straight match with a 5-2 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon. Upstate swept doubles play for the second straight match, helping to move the team above .500 for the first time this season at 5-4.

Sophomores Edgar Rodriguez and Ramiro Blanco started things off for Upstate with an 8-5 win over Jeremie Tardif and Andrew Veeder at No. 2 and freshman Gary Goudsmet and senior Jack Roux added an 8-5 win over Matthew Herrock and Matthew Parker at No. 3. The team rounded out the doubles wins with an 8-6 win at No. 1, with seniors Javier Tori and Renzo Airaldi posting an 8-6 win over Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer.

In singles play, Upstate continued to play well, with Roux posting a 6-0, 6-2 win over A. Knutsson-Sunblad at No. 3 before a loss at No. 6. The Spartans rebounded, though, as Tori notched a 6-2, 6-0 win over Veeder at No. 2 before a loss at No. 1 made it, 3-2. Blanco clinched the match, however, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tardif at No. 5 singles and Airaldi wrapped up the match with a 7-6 (6), 6-3 win over Altmayer at No. 3.

The Spartans get back into action on Thursday when they kick off a weekend in Tennessee with a match against Tennessee Tech at 2 p.m. The Spartans wrap up the weekend with a pair of A-Sun matches, facing Belmont at 1 p.m. on Friday and Lipscomb at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
