Men's Soccer Downs Clemson in Exhibition Action

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – To close out the 2010 exhibition slate, USC Upstate claimed a 2-1 victory over visiting Clemson on Tuesday night at County University Soccer Stadium.

Upstate got on the board first in the 15th-minute when freshman Jan Wienholt (Bocholt, Germany/Gymnasium HS) scored on Timo Forester's (Oberkirk, Germany/Hans Furler Gymnasium) corner kick from the left side.

"Our team battled well tonight, but we still have to work hard each and every match," said head coach Greg Hooks.  "I emphasized to our new players that every match was going to be a battle and nothing was going to come easy.  Obviously, we have to remember that this was an exhibition and our players have to continue to give it their all."

The Spartans nearly took a 2-0 lead heading to the half when John Collins' (Cape Cod, Mass./Barnstable HS) had his shot ricochet off the top of the crossbar.

After the intermission, Clemson immediately went on the attack taking two shots within the first 1:02.  The first shot by Austin Savage was saved by Upstate keeper Jason McCabe (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork HS).  Philipp Soppa (Sousbeck, Germany/Berufskolleg Geldru) was there to block Mackenzie Ward's shot to keep the Spartans in front 1-0.

Upstate took a 2-0 lead on Hakeem King's (Port of Spain, Trinidad/St. Mary's College) goal from the top of the box in the 51st-minute.  Maurice Beggs (Arima, Trinidad/Middle Georgia College) and James Hadley (Wymondham, Great Britain/Wymondham HS) were credited with an assist on the play.

Clemson scored its lone goal of the match in the 55th-minute when Austin Savage scored after the ball bounced away from keeper Jason McCabe.

In the match, Clemson took a total of 15 shots compared to 14 for the Spartans.  Upstate tallied five saves, while Clemson recorded two.  Upstate was whistled for 16 fouls and one offside, with Clemson called for 14 fouls and two offside penalties.

The Spartans will return to action on Sept. 1, when they travel to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern at 4:00 p.m.
