Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate will begin its second swing through the A-Sun when it travels to Johnson City, Tenn., Wednesday night to face East Tennessee State in a matchup of two of the league's top four teams. Upstate claimed a 78-70 victory over ETSU in Spartanburg on Dec. 4, but the Buccaneers still lead the all-time series, 5-2. Upstate, though, has won two of the last three meetings.
Upstate enters the game with a 10-8 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the A-Sun. The Spartans swept Belmont and Lipscomb over the weekend to stay in the hunt near the top of the standings and are on a three-game winning streak. ETSU enters the game with a 10-9 overall record and a 7-3 mark in the A-Sun. The Buccaneers also swept Belmont and Lipscomb this past weekend.

Looking Back at Lipscomb
Upstate got a standout performance by senior post player Chelsea McMillan who finished with a double-double to lead the Spartans over Lipscomb, 77-70, in the CSS Women's Basketball Game of the Week Monday night in the Hodge Center. McMillan totaled just five points and five rebounds in the first half, but came alive to push the Spartans to the win in the second half. She finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds for the game, turning in 18 points and 11 boards in the second half alone. Upstate and Lipscomb battled back and forth in the first half before Lipscomb scored the final five points of the period to open a 38-35 lead at halftime. The teams once again battled back and forth until McMillan put the Spartans on her shoulders and delivered a lead late in the game. Upstate increased its advantage to seven points and held off the Lady Bisons down the stretch. Tee'Ara Copney added 19 points, six rebounds and six assists in the game. The win was the first ever on television in the Hodge Center for either the women's or men's programs at Upstate.
Scouting ETSU
ETSU enters Wednesday night's game against Upstate with a 10-9 overall record and a 7-3 mark in the A-Sun. The Buccaneers are tied with Campbell for second place in the league standings.
ETSU has won four of its last five games, including a sweep of the action over the weekend against Lipscomb and Belmont. The Buccaneers have also picked up league wins over Campbell, Mercer, Kennesaw State, Stetson and Jacksonville. They have dropped league games to Upstate, Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida.
ETSU is one of the top-scoring teams in the A-Sun. The Buccaneers average 70.4 points per game. They also have the ability to give up points with opponents averaging 72.9 points per outing. They shoot 39 percent from the floor, 32 percent from the three-point arc and 76 percent from the free throw line. Opponents shoot 41 percent from the floor and 30 percent from the arc.
ETSU is solid on the boards, averaging right at 43 rebounds per outing. Opponents also crash the boards to the tune of nearly 42 rebounds per game.
Tara Davis leads ETSU in scoring and is one of three Buccaneers to average in double figures. She tops the club with 16.1 points per game, 85 assists and 37 steals. Destiny Mitchell ranks second in scoring at 14.4 ppg and leads the squad with 8.8 rebounds per outing. She posted a double-double in the first meeting this year with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Natalie Pickwell ranks third with 11.3 ppg.
Copney Named A-Sun Player of the Week
Tee'Ara Copney had a strong week in leading Upstate to a 3-0 record last week and has been named the A-Sun Player of the Week (Jan. 25). Copney reached double figures in all three games, averaging 18.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game. She scored 14 points in the win over Longwood (Jan. 19), 23 points in the win over Belmont (Jan. 22) and 19 in the win over Lipscomb (Jan. 24). Copney is the fourth different Spartan to receive weekly honors from the league since 2007 and the first this season.
Upstate's Win Over Lipscomb First Ever for Upstate On TV at Home
The win over Lipscomb (Jan. 24) in the CSS Game of the Week was not only the first-ever women's basketball game to be telecast from the Hodge Center, it was also the first time an Upstate basketball team has won on television at home. The men's team has played two games on television in the Hodge Center and has dropped both contests.
Wallace Second on All-Time Three-Point List, Eyes All-Time Mark
Junior sharpshooter Kendra Wallace not only surpassed second place on Upstate's all-time three-point record, she is eyeing the top spot. She currently has 161 career three-pointers for second place on the all-time list. The top spot is owned by Stephanie Feyes (2001-05). The Columbus, Ohio, native made 169 in her four-year career at Upstate. Wallace is just 8 away from the all-time mark.
Roach Turns in Strong Outing Versus Belmont
Freshman forward Kim Roach has shown progress throughout her first season playing college ball. On Saturday against Belmont, she turned in one of the best games of her young career. She finished with 13 points and turned in career highs with eight rebounds and three steals. A 58 percent free throw shooter, she was 7-for-9 from the charity stripe for the game.
Spartans Do Work at Free Throw Line
Part of the reason Upstate claimed a dominant win over Belmont (Jan. 22) was its performance at the free throw line. The league's second-best free throw shooting team, Upstate converted 26-of-30 (.867) for the game.
Jacobs Notches First Career Double-Double
Freshman Kyana Jacobs has made steady progress learning to play the point guard position on the college level. On Jan. 17 in Jacksonville, she put it together and recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 assists. The 10 assists is tied with Tee'Ara Copney (at Indiana State) for the single-game school record during the Division I era.
McMillan Tops 1,000 Career Points
Senior post player Chelsea McMillan has reached career scoring milestones of 800 and 900 points this season. With a career-high 34 points at North Florida (Jan. 15), she not only reached 1,000 points, she surpassed it. She started her collegiate career at Santa Fe Community College before transferring to Upstate as a sophomore. She is the 13th person in the history of the program to achieve the mark.
Copney Tops 600 Career Points
Sophomore Tee'Ara Copney needed just eight points to reach 600 in her Upstate career entering the game against Lipscomb (Jan. 24). She earned that and more, finishing with 19 to surpass the 600-point plateau in her young career.
McMillan Tops 700 Career Rebounds
With 17 rebounds at North Florida (Jan. 15), senior Chelsea McMillan reached yet another statistical milestone, 700 in her career. She currently has 744 rebounds in her two and a half years in the program. She ranks fifth all-time at Upstate, 40 away from fourth on the all-time list. Yakeeshia Ross owns the top mark with 991 in her brilliant four-year career from 2002-06.

Upstate senior post player Chelsea McMillan either leads or is near the top of the A-Sun rankings in several statistical categories. She leads the conference with 11.5 rebounds per game and 1.9 blocks per outing. She ranks second in scoring at 16.7 points per game, while also ranking in the top 15 in field goal percentage, free throw percentage, steals and blocked shots.
Upstate Among A-Sun's Statistical Leaders
As a team, Upstate leads the A-Sun in steals at 10.6 per game and defensive rebounds at 27.9 per outing. The Spartans also rank in the top three in scoring (2nd, 71.2 ppg), free throw percentage (2nd, 73.2%), rebounding (2nd, 41.9 rpg) and assists (3rd, 14.2 apg). Individually, Chelsea McMillan tops the conference with 11.5 rebounds per outing and 1.9 blocked shots per game.
McMillan a Double-Double Machine
Chelsea McMillan holds Upstate's record for the most double-doubles in Upstate's Division I history. She has posted double dips 31 times in her three years in the program. After posting six as a sophomore in 2008-09, she tallied 16 last season, recording a double-double in more than half of the games last season. She started the 2010-11 season with a bang, going for 17 points and a career-high 20 rebounds at Mississippi State (Nov. 12). She now has nine double dips this season.
