CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ramiro Blanco advanced to the Round of 32 to highlight the Spartan effort on day one of the ITA Regionals at the University of North Carolina's Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Blanco, seeded 12th in the singles event, earned a first-round bye. In his first official match of the tournament, the senior rallied past Appalachian State's Phillip Kloc. Kloc claimed the first set 6-4, but Blanco rallied to claim sets two and three by scores of 6-0 and 6-3, respectively.
Blanco will return to the courts tomorrow at 1 p.m. to face Amogh Prabhakar of Wake Forest.
Yvon Haessig claimed a three set victory over Jack Waissen of North Carolina Central (4-6, 6-3, 6-0), before falling to Torsten Wietsoka (Duke) in straight sets (4-6, 4-6).
Edgar Rodriguez fell in the opening round to UNC Greensboro's Ahmet Sarioglu, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 4-6. Gonzalo Blanco also fell in three sets Friday as he was up-ended by Dejon Bivens (Winthrop), 6-3, 6-7 (3), 1-6.
Two other Spartans had their runs in the singles tournament ended on day one. Matthias Kidler fell to UNC Asheville's Adrien Langeard, 6-7 (3), 3-6 and Pierre Vernin fell in straight sets, 0-6, 4-6, to Leo Christofides of Coastal Carolina.
All three of Upstate's doubles teams were also eliminated on day one of the ITA Regionals.
