Upstate Volleyball Finishes 2011 Season with 3-0 Loss to Lipscomb

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Lipscomb at the Hodge Center today as seniors Kelsie Queen (Blythewood, S.C.) and Morgan Thomas (Plantation, Fla.) played their last matches in a Spartan uniform.  

The senior duo has been a constant presence on the court for Upstate the last four years with both Queen and Thomas being four-starters for the program. Queen as tallied 847 kills in her career, while scooping up 370 career-digs.

Thomas totaled 1,049 career-kills for the Spartans, ranking ninth all-time in school history and topping the program's Division-I era record books. With 75 solo blocks and 240 assisted denials for a total of 315 career-rejections, the middle blocker owns every blocking record in Upstate's D-I era. She ranks eight all-time in career-blocks and fourth all-time in assisted denials.

The Spartans were led by Thomas with 10 kills, two blocks, two digs and one service ace on the day. Junior setter Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) helped the offensive effort, dishing out 18 assists and adding three kills. Juniors Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.) and Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.) each contributed four kills.  

Defensively, sophomore Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) led Upstate with 14 digs, while Queen had six digs and one kill. Freshman Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) also collected six digs on the day to go along with two kills, while Sanders recorded five digs.

Lipscomb was led by a trio of hitters with double-digit kills. Lauren Ford and Jewell Dobson each tallied 13 kills on the day, while Kaycee Green had 12 kills. Caitlin Dotson and Abby Fay split the setting duties for the Bison with 25 and 19 assists, respectively.

Stephanie Rex led the Lipscomb defense, registering 13 digs. Megan Stout added 10 digs to help the Bisons.  

The Bisons lead the all-time series 8-0, including a 4-0 record at the Hodge. Lipscomb beat the Spartans in Nashville, Tenn., 3-0 Sept. 30.
