Spartan Women's Basketball Fall No. 20/19 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball team (0-2) fell to No. 20/19 North Carolina (2-0) 91-34 today at the historic Carmichael Arena.

The Spartans dropped their first of two contests against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents this season. Upstate travels to No. 8/8 Duke Dec. 11 for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Upstate was led by junior Tee'Ara Copney (Asheville, S.C.) with 16 points and two assists, while junior Hannah Ohl (Danville, Ill.) put up seven. Junior Tyra Smith (Lawrenceville, Ga.) posted four assists, grabbed two steals and collected two rebounds.   

Freshman Paulina Zaveckaite (Gainesville, Fla.) snagged a team team-high eight rebounds, while classmate Shelby Hicks (Greenville, Tenn.) contributed four boards. Zaveckaite also recorded four points and three steals for the day.

North Carolina was led by Brittany Roundtree with 15 points and five assists, while Laura Broomfield registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She'la White helped with 13 points, while Latifah Coleman and Megan Buckland contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.

"Coming to Chapel Hill and playing a ranked team like North Carolina was great exposer for our program," said Upstate head coach Tammy George. "Playing strong competition like this will only help make us a better team."

UNC took a 48-12 point lead into the locker room at halftime. The second half was more promising for Upstate, recording 22 points. The Spartans shot 2-for-6 (33.3) from the charity stripe, compared to the Tar Heels' 15-for-27 (55.6). From the floor Upstate shot 24.1 percent, while UNC was 54.8 percent.

Upstate is back in action Wednesday, Nov. 16, traveling to Vanderbilt for a 7 p.m. game. Vandy is receiving votes in both the Preseason AP Top 25 Poll and the Preseason ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll. Follow the Spartans this season on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
