Spartans Drop Road Finale at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Senior forward Chelsea McMillan (East Gasden, Fla.) posted game highs in points (32) and rebounds (12) as she finished with her 17th double of the season.  McMillan's strong effort was not enough as Campbell shot 57.4% from the floor and led wire to wire on Saturday en route to the 98-70 victory inside the Pope Convocation Center.

McMillan finished just two points shy of her career-high of 34 points that she posted at North Florida on Jan. 15, 2011.  She was 10-for-20 from the floor and finished 12-for-13 at the charity stripe.

Campbell (13-16, 12-8 A-Sun) opened the game on a 6-0 spurt over the first 1:53 of the game.  Tonisha Baker scored four of the first six points for the Camels.

USC Upstate (16-12, 12-7) cut the lead to three, 12-9, with 14:09 to play on a pair of free throws by McMillan.

Campbell used a 15-4 run over a span of 7:23 as the Camels increased their lead to 27-13 with 6:46 remaining in the first half.

The Camels pushed the lead to as many as 19 in the first period and carried a 44-25 lead into the locker room at intermission.

At halftime McMillan had 10 points to lead the Spartans, who connected on just seven field goals in the first 20 minutes. Campbell had a pair of players tally 13 points in the first frame (Tonisha Baker and Lauren Yesh).

After McMillan connected on a layup with 19:44 to play, the Camels pushed the lead to 23 with a 6-0 run.  Jazmine Cooper's layup with 18:03 remaining gave Campbell a 50-27 advantage.

Over the final 18 minutes, the Spartans couldn't get any closer than 18 and Campbell led by as many as 32 before the final tally was set at 18.

Aside from McMillan's 32 points, the Spartans were led by Sharniece Wadelington (Greenville, S.C.) who finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.  Tee'Ara Copney (Asheville, N.C.) added eight points for the Spartans, however the sophomore didn't connect on her first field goal until the 3:40 mark of the second half.

Tonisha Baker led the Camels as she finished 12-for-15 from the floor and a game-high 30 points.  Lauren Yesh pitched in 20 points while Jazmine Cooper added 10.

The Spartans shot just 31.4% (22-for-70) from the floor on Saturday including a 7-for-34 effort in the first half (20.6%). 

Upstate will return to action on Monday night at the Hodge Center as it hosts Florida Gulf Coast in the season finale at 5:00 p.m.
