SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNC Greensboro defeated USC Upstate 6-1 in non-conference men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. With the win, UNCG improves to 3-0 on the season, while Upstate falls to 0-6.
The Spartans got the day off to a good start, claiming a hard-fought doubles points as a result wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Matias Di Pasquale and Marco Linconir were able to hold off UNCG's Orcun Seyrek and Ahmet Sarioglu, 8-6, while Upstate's Gonzalo Blanco and Andres Sanchez helped seal the point with a thrilling 9-7 win over the UNCG's Yaroslav Litus and Zach Reece.
From there, however, it was all UNCG, as the visiting Spartans claimed all five singles point to claim their third victory of the season. Seyrek take a 6-1, 6-3 win over Upstate's Gonzalo Blanco at the No. 1 position, while Timion Meijs claimed a 6-3, 6-3 win over Matias Di Pasquale at the No. 2.
UNCG's Litus claimed a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Gianluca Paino at the No. 3, while Chanon Varapongsittikul was able to hold off Upstate's Marco Linconir, 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 4.
The most competitive singles point of the afternoon came at the No. 6 position, where UNCG's Zack Reece was finally able to claim a 6-4 win in extra sets to help the visitors sweep the singles points.
Upstate will return to the court on Friday, Feb. 11 as it hosts Coastal Carolina in a match slated to begin at 12 p.m.
