SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern captured a 6-1 win over USC Upstate in non-conference women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. The score was no indicator of the competitive nature of the match, which was no more evident than at the No. 3 flight, where Upstate's Ana-Sofia Camberos was able to claim the all-important match point in extra sets, claiming a 10-2 triumph, allowing the Spartans to garner their only point of the afternoon.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 1-0.
However, Camberos' stellar effort would only be consolation for the Spartans on Sunday, but something for a program in a transition phase to build on as the Spartans continue improvement under first-year head coach Oliver Trittenwein.
At the No. 1 singles position, GSU's Paola Garrido claimed a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Karen Martinez, while the Eagles' Ali Beavers was able to hold off Talia Rojas at the No. 2, claiming a 6-4, 6-1 result. The Eagles claimed their third of four singles matches at the No. 4 position, as GSU's Ashley Hungerford claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Catherine Estupinan.
The Eagles would begin the afternoon by claiming the doubles point after Garrido and Beavers claimed an 8-1 win over the No.1 Spartan tandem of Camberos and Rojas. GSU was able to ensure the doubles point at the No. 2 position, as Melanie Rolle and Hungerford were able to hold off 8-4 in the decisive doubles match.
The Spartan women will return to the court on Thursday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Clinton, S.C., to face Presbyterian. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
