MACON, Ga. – On Friday afternoon, the USC Upstate men's tennis team claimed a 5-2 win over Mercer at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center.
Upstate was able to claim the doubles point with victories at doubles number one and two. Ramiro Blanco and Matias Di Pasquale claimed a 8-3 win over Evandro Rosindo and Peter Tauchner at doubles number one. Meanwhile, Gonazlo Blanco and Edgar Rodriguez teamed up for an 8-5 win over Pierre Tafelski and David Barton.
"Our team got off to a great start today as we had a chance to win all three doubles matches," said head coach Oliver Trittenwein. ""Four of the six guys got an early lead in their respective singles matches as they claimed the first set. I thought we gained the momentum to help us close out the match. The momentum we gained had a snowball effect and each of our players were able to feed off each other from that point on in the match and close it out in solid fashion."
Edgar Rodriguez claimed a straight sets victory (7-5, 6-0) over Pierre Tafelski at singles position number one. At singles number two, Ramiro Blanco also claimed a straight sets victory as he got past Peter Tauchner, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Matias Di Pasquale and Marco Linconir also claimed straight set wins at positions number three and five, respectively. Di Pasquale claimed a 7-5, 7-5 win over Fernando Armendaris, while Linconir downed Guilherme Frias 6-4, 6-2.
Gonzalo Blanco put up a valiant effort at singles number four. However, Blanco ultimately fell in three sets to Mercer's Evandro Rosindo (5-7, 6-4, 7-10).
The Spartans will return to action tomorrow afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. match at Kennesaw state
