BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Despite picking up the doubles point, the Spartan tennis team had to hold off a resilient Campbell squad to claim a 4-3 victory on Friday afternoon at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
"To cap off the season the way we did means a great deal for our program," said head coach Oliver Trittenwein. "Picking up a win over a top-program in our league is very important and we look forward to picking up right where we left off next season."
Upstate claimed the doubles points with victories by Ramiro Blanco/Matias Di Pasquale (8-6, doubles number one) and Gonzalo Blanco/Edgar Rodriguez (8-1, doubles number two).
"This is our final year of transition, meaning we are not eligible for the A-Sun Tournament," added Trittenwein. "With no conference tournament bid on the line, I was proud of the way our team competed today."
In singles action, it was Gianluca Paino that rallied past Ondrej Kralik, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to give the Spartans the 4-3 win and a shot at finishing in a tie for second in the A-Sun, should North Florida fall to Jacksonville tomorrow.
Ramiro Blanco claimed a 6-3, 7-6 victory at singles number two while Marco Linconir picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at singles number five to help lift the Spartans to the victory.
