Spartans Blanked by Bulldogs at Citadel/Nike Soccer Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team surrendered four first half goals and The Citadel claimed a 5-0 victory over the Spartans on Friday evening at WLI Field.

The Bulldogs scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 8th-minute as Vanessa Aponte put her shot past Upstate goalkeeper Rachel Collins (Raleigh, N.C.).  The Citadel pushed the lead to 2-0 when Grace Raines scored less than eight minutes later.

The homestanding Bulldogs tacked on two more goals in the first half (Ruth Leiva, 36'; Aponte, 44') as they took a 4-0 lead into the locker room at intermission.

The Citadel tacked on its fifth and final goal of the contest in the 59th-minute when Mariana Garcia scored off of a corner kick.

The Bulldogs totaled 30 shots and 17 on-goal, while Upstate took nine total shots with eight on-target.  The Citadel also led the way in corners, 5-2.

Collins tallied 10 saves in 45 minutes of play, while Sarah Plantz (Cartersville, Ga.) recorded two saves in the second half.  The Bulldogs totaled eight saves in the match.

The Spartans return to action on Sunday afternoon when they play Charleston Southern.  Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
