RADFORD, Va. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (2-4) split a pair of matches today at the third annual Radford Fall Tournament. The UMKC Kangaroos (2-3) bounced the Spartans 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-11) this morning, before Upstate declawed the Chicago State Cougars (1-7) 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-22) as junior Emily Sanders was named to the all-tournament team.
Over the weekend, Sanders dished out 101 assists, collected 28 digs and added seven kills.
Against the UMKC, Sanders led the Spartans with 17 assists and five digs, while freshman Kayla McAvoy led the offense with six kills. Sophomore Morgan Page posted a team-high nine digs.
For the Kangaroos, Chloe Jarema registered a match-high 11 kills and eight blocks, while Ella Meier dished out 19 assists. UMKC had two players with double-digit digs as Kelsey Knoche and Nicole Kerkman recorded 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Against Chicago State, Sanders registered 29 assists, seven digs, and six kills, while Queen recorded nine kills, one block and one dig. Two Spartans had double-digit digs as Page and Quimby had 15 and 10, respectively. McAvoy added eight kills, while Thomas contributed seven.
Alexandra Mason led the Cougars with 16 kills, while Mysta Townsell collected 16 digs. Angelica Brewer recorded 18 assists, eight kills and five digs, while Emily Kramolisch posted 13 assists, six digs and three kills.
Upstate is now 2-0 against Chicago State. In the teams' last match-up, the Spartans swept the Cougars at a neutral site in Peoria, Ill., Aug. 29, 2009 in three-sets with scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-11.
Upstate is back in action Sept. 9-10, traveling to the Air Force Academy Tournament to square off with Northern Arizona, Air Force and Utah Valley. Follow the Spartans this season on Facebook and Twitter.
