SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After claiming the doubles point, the USC Upstate women's tennis team won the first three singles matches of the day en route to the 5-2 win over Presbyterian College Saturday at the Upstate Tennis Complex.

"After the struggles of last spring, picking up our first win in our first match proves we are heading in the right direction," said head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein. " It was good to see all of the players come out and play hard today; they came out with the required focus and anticipation in order to achieve the goals we want to accomplish."

Upstate (1-0) claimed the doubles point as it claimed victories at doubles No. 1 and No. 2.  In the No. 1 doubles match, Talia Rojas and Isabel von Stryk downed PC's (0-1) Paige Oelke and Greer Ransom, 8-2.  Julie Bell and Ana-Sofia Camberos teamed up for an 8-4 win over Cara Caruso/Patricia Alves at doubles No. 2.

Upstate's von Stryk picked up her first collegiate win when PC's Paige Oelke retired in the first set.  The Spartans earned the victory as both Talia Rojas (singles No. 4) and Maria Tonani (singles No. 6) claimed straight-set wins.

Julie Bell, playing singles No. 2, earned her first win as a Spartan as the junior-transfer defeated Greer Ransom in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-4).

The Spartans will return to action Thursday when they host Anderson University at 1 p.m.
