MACON, Ga. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (9-13, 4-6 A-Sun) swept Mercer (8-12, 4-6 A-Sun) in three sets in an Atlantic Sun Conference road contest Tuesday by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14.
The Spartans were led by a pair of double-doubles from freshmen Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) and Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.). Eversgered tallied a match-high 17 kills to go along with a team-high 20 digs, while Gober handed out a match-best 32 assists and collected 16 digs. Gober also recorded four service aces. This marked the eighth double-double for Eversgerd and the seventh for Gober this season.
Upstate sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boiling Springs, S.C.) was second on the team, registering 10 kills and two assisted blocks. Freshman Shannon Weiss (Highland, Ill.) flirted with a double-double, posting nine kills and 11 digs. Senior Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.) contributed with five kills and eight digs.
Junior Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) and senior Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) helped the Spartan defensive effort, scooping up 10 and nine digs, respectively. Sanders also gave out six assists on the night.
Mercer was led by Molly Locke with eight kills and 16 digs, while Jennifer Katona recorded seven kills. Monica Sanchez quarterbacked the Bear offense, dishing out 21 assists to go along with six digs. Emily Rochefort posted a match-best 22 digs, while Jamie Duffy had 11 digs and six kills.
