SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After dropping a pair of road matches over the weekend, the USC Upstate men's tennis team was able to even its season record at 2-2 with a 6-1 victory over Anderson University Wednesday afternoon at the Upstate Tennis Complex.
Upstate swept the doubles matches to take an early 1-0 advantage on Anderson (1-1).
In singles action, the Spartans were able to claim victory in five of the six matches, including four in straight sets. Ramiro Blanco pushed his season win streak to four-straight with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Stan Atema.
Yvon Haessig (singles No. 3), Gonzalo Blanco (singles No. 4) and Jacob Darling (singles No. 6) picked up their first singles victories of the season.
At singles No. 2, Tyler Grove defeated Krystof Gulbinovic in a three-set thriller. Grove won set one, 6-3, before dropping set number two, 6-7 (5). In the tiebreaker set, Grove outlasted Gulbinovic, 15-13, to earn the win.
Upstate will return to the courts next Tuesday when the team travels to Clinton, S.C., for a 2 p.m. match at Presbyterian College.
