JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team was unable to prolong its season as the squad fell 7-0 at ETSU Saturday afternoon at the Buddy Hartsell Tennis Center.
The Spartans, who were tied at 4-4 in the league standings with Jacksonville entering today, got the help they needed as Kennesaw State defeated Jacksonville earlier Saturday.
However, the Spartans were unable to punch a ticket to next week's A-Sun Championship as they were unable to defeat the Bucs. Despite falling just short of the conference tournament, the women were vastly improved in 2012 compared to 2011. A season ago, the women's team failed to win a match, but this season they were just one win away from a tournament berth.
Despite suffering straight-set losses, Isabel von Stryk and Maria Tonani posted strong efforts. Von Stryk (singles No. 1) dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision to ETSU's Paula Jaime. At singles No. 6, Tonani, who had her six-match singles win streak snapped, fell 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 to Kelsey Williams.
