SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Brody Greer (Honea Path, S.C.) finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs, including the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the USC Upstate baseball team downed Jacksonville, 3-2, in the series opener Friday night at Harley Park.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 27-12 overall and 11-5 in league play, while Jacksonville dips 14-26 overall and 4-9 in the Atlantic Sun.
Greer, with one out in the ninth, walked on four straight pitches and advanced to second on a bunt single by Jordan Stampler (Davie, Fla.). Gaither Bumgardner (Fort Lawn, S.C.) followed with a RBI single back up the middle allowing Greer to sprint home and score fifth and final run of Friday's contest.
Ben Augenstein (2-1, Sebastian, Fla.) earned the win in relief after surrendering just one walk with three punch outs in 1.2 innings of work.
Dolphin reliever Jimmy Appleby was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings on the hill.
Jacksonville plated the game's first run when Adam Brett Walker homered to right with two outs in the top of the first.
Upstate loaded the bases in the third; however, the Spartans were unable to push any runs across as Austin Liput (Oviedo, Fla.) struck out to end the inning.
The Spartans were able to break through in the bottom of the fifth with a single run to tie the contest at one. Trey Richardson (Lakeland, Fla.) singled to the gap in left center to open the inning and then with one away, Greer drove in Richardson with a double to right.
Greer was able to give the Spartans a 2-1 advantage when he hit a solo homerun, the first of his career, over the wall in left center field.
Jacksonville tied the contest at two as Adam Brett Walker scored (unearned) as Dan Gulbransen singled and reached second on a throwing error by Stampler.
The Spartans held the Dolphins scoreless in the ninth, setting the stage for the dramatic, walkoff win.
Despite receiving a no-decision, both starting pitchers had solid performances Friday night. Upstate starter David Roseboom (Pattersonville, N.Y.) tallied a career-high eight strikeouts in seven innings of work. The sophomore allowed just one run on six hits with one walk. Meanwhile, Dolphin starter Chris Anderson allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts in seven innings.
Greer paced the Spartans with his 3-for-3 (2B, HR) effort, while Stampler finished with three hits.
Adam Brett Walker led the Dolphins with a 4-for-4 effort (Two Doubles, HR) to go along with two runs and one RBI.
The Spartans and Dolphins will tangle tomorrow in the second game of the three-game set beginning at 2 p.m. Scott DeCecco (Cape May Courthouse, N.J.) is slated to get the start for the Spartans.
