Box Score Spartanburg, S.C. – Following a 3-1 week last week and winning four of its last five games, the USC Upstate softball team remains one of the top mid-major programs in the nation, coming in at No. 20 in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Spartans have also returned to gaining national attention after receiving votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll.
Upstate, at 39-11, is the only A-Sun team to be ranked in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll released by midmajorpoll.blogspot.com. The Spartans are 20th in the latest poll and peaked at No. 9 for two straight weeks a month ago. Louisiana-Lafayette, which is ranked in the top 10 in the national top 25 polls, is ranked first in the Mid-Major Top 25 poll.
In addition to its ranking in the mid-major poll, Upstate has garnered national respect again this season. The Spartans received two votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 poll. If the poll was expanded beyond the top 25, Upstate would be ranked 35th. The Spartans received votes in both the ESPN.com/USA Softball and NFCA/USA Today Top 25 polls earlier this season.
Upstate opens the A-Sun Tournament today at 5:30 p.m. as the No. 3 seed. The Spartans will face 6th-seeded Stetson in the first round of the tournament being hosted by Upstate at Cyrill Stadium. Other teams in the tournament are #1 seed Kennesaw State, #2 seed Kennesaw State, #4 seed Lipscomb and #5 seed Jacksonville.
