Upstate Volleyball Falls at Florida Gulf Coast, 3-0

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The USC Upstate volleyball team (5-10, 1-3 A-Sun) dropped a 3-0 decision at Atlantic Sun Conference foe Florida Gulf Coast (9-7, 5-0 A-Sun) Saturday by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-20.

The Spartans were led by freshman Lexi Gober (Edwardsville, Ill.), posting her second double-double of the season with 29 assists and 11 digs. Senior Emily Bingham (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and freshman Kayla Eversgerd (Breese, Ill.) recorded a team-high nine kills apiece. Bingham added two digs and two total blocks on the night, while Eversgerd collected five digs.

Upstate sophomore Kayla McAvoy (Boling Springs, S.C.) was second on the squad with seven kills, while freshman Javon Gates (Indianapolis) registered three kills, two blocks and one dig. It was deuces wild on the night for senior Mindy Quimby (Keenesburg, Colo.). She posted two kills, two digs and two service aces for the Spartans.

Senior Emily Sanders (Sullivan, Ill.) scooped up a team-high for the Spartans with 16 digs. Junior Morgan Page (Woodstock, Ga.) recorded five digs, while Sanders also handed out two assists.

FGCU was led by a trio of double-figure hitters, including two with double-doubles. Olivia Mesner tallied a match-high 12 kills, while Jill Hopper and Christine Pinder recorded 11 kills each. Hopper and Pinder completed their double-doubles, collecting 10 and 12 digs, respectively. Whitney Masters led the Eagle defensive effort with a match-high 21 digs.

Gigi Meyer and Courtney Greenberg split the setting duties for the Eagles Saturday. Meyer dished out a match-high 27 assists, while Greenberg gave out 21 helpers.
