Upstate Drops Three-Set Decision at Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Fla. – The USC Upstate volleyball team fell on the road Saturday afternoon to the Jacksonville Dolphins 3-0 in Atlantic Sun action at Swisher Gym.

The Dolphins won the match by scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 28-26.

Kayla Eversgerd increased her season total of double-digit kills to 14 matches after posting a team-high 15 for the Spartans. Lexi Gober and Amanda Carroll combined for 32 assists on the afternoon, as Gober had 22 and Carroll 10. Morgan Page led the Upstate defense with 12 digs.

Jacksonville opened the match by capturing the first set 25-14. The Spartans never trailed by more than two points in the opening stages as the Dolphins held a 10-8 lead following an attack error by Emily Koelling. Jacksonville then went on a 6-1 run to lead 16-9 and held its lead at seven points. The opening set was won for the Dolphins on an Upstate attack error.

JU captured seven of the first nine points of the second set to lead 7-2. The Dolphins stretched their lead to 19-11, but the Spartans staged a late rally to trim their deficit. Trailing by eight, Upstate went on a 10-5 run to cut Jacksonville's advantage to three at 24-21 following Kylie Jacob's attack error. The Dolphins would win the set on the next play, 25-21, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set would prove to be an exciting one as it featured six ties and five lead changes. Despite falling behind 10-3 to begin the set, the Spartans rallied with an 18-11 run to tie the frame at 21 apiece. The two teams then began to trade points over the next several plays until the score sat at 25-25. Shannon Weiss' kill gave Upstate set point at 26-25, but JU would tie it on the next play. Jacksonville tallied the next two points to win the set, and match, 28-26.

Gabriela Roman led all Dolphin players with 12 kills while Sammie Strausbaugh had 11.

Upstate returns to the G.B. Hodge Center Tuesday, Oct. 22 when it hosts the Kennesaw State Owls at 6 p.m.
