Upstate Hosts Kennesaw State in Midweek Contest

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team returns home Tuesday evening for an Atlantic Sun matchup against the Kennesaw State Owls at 6 p.m. inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

Upstate went 0-2 last weekend playing two A-Sun matches in the state of Florida. The Spartans fell 3-1 Friday evening at North Florida before dropping a 3-0 decision against Jacksonville.

Kennesaw State won the first match earlier this season in Kennesaw 3-0. In the contest, Shannon Weiss led the Upstate offense with seven kills, while Lexi Gober added 19 assists and eight digs. Morgan Page led the team with 14 digs.

Kayla Eversgerd leads Upstate's offense and defense with 237 kills and 231 digs. Currently, she ranks seventh in the conference in kills and tenth in digs. Gober has a team-best 630 assists, 18 service aces and .276 hitting percentage on the season. She is ninth in the league in assists. Emily Koelling is first on the team with 37 total blocks and second with 167 kills.

The Owls are under the direction of first-year head coach Keith Schunzel.

Heading into the Tuesday night showdown, Kennesaw State leads the all-time series 8-3. The series began in 2007 with Upstate winning 3-0 in Spartanburg. The Spartans won the first two meetings in the series before the Owls won seven straight. Upstate was victorious in the last match in Spartanburg, 3-0, in 2012.

The Spartans travel to Johnson City, Tenn. Friday evening for a 7 p.m. contest against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers.
