Box Score Nashville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate volleyball team fell 3-0 on the road Friday evening to the Lipscomb Bisons in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Allen Arena.
The Spartans fall to 1-12 on the season and 1-3 in league play, while the Bisons improve to 9-5 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Upstate returns to the court Saturday afternoon when it travels to face the Northern Kentucky Norse at 3 p.m.
Lipscomb won the match by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.
Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Eversgerd finished just shy of her second straight double-double with a team-high nine kills and 15 digs. Freshman middle blocker Emily Koelling added seven kills, while freshman outside hitter Alexa Lagaly and sophomore right side Shannon Weiss had six each. Sophomore setter Lexi Gober finished with 24 assists.
The two teams traded the first eight points of the opening set before Lipscomb used kills from Lauren Ford and Brittnay Estes, and an attack error by Weiss, to go ahead 7-4. The Spartans cut their deficit to two, 14-12, but the Bisons answered with a 6-3 run to extend their advantage to 20-15. Lipscomb recorded the final six points the capture the first set 25-15.
The second set opened in similar fashion as the first with the Bisons holding a 5-4 lead early. Trailing 13-9, Upstate fought back to tie the set at 13 after a kill by Koelling. Lipscomb then went on a 7-2 run to extend its lead to 20-15, and went on to win the set 25-18.
LU scored four of the opening five points during the third set and held a three-point advantage throughout the opening stages. A kill from Ford put Lipscomb in front 16-10 until the Spartans rallied to trail by three at 19-16 after an attack error by Sophie Kellerman. Upstate, with the Bisons sitting on match point at 24-19, attempted a late rally to extend the contest to a fourth set. The Spartans recorded three straight points to cut the lead to 24-22 following a kill by Eversgerd, but Lipscomb would capture the match on Ford's kill to give the Bisons a 25-22 set victory.
Jewell Dobson led all Lipscomb players with 20 kills on the evening, and was joined by Ford with 17.
