KENNESAW, Ga. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team dropped a close one on the road Friday to Kennesaw State, falling 4-3 in Atlantic Sun Conference action at Fair Oaks Tennis Center.
The Spartans (12-7, 4-3 A-Sun) opened the day claiming an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles as Allison Beeler and Constanze Kuerten defeated KSU's (9-10, 4-3 A-Sun) Therese Lagerkvist and Blaire LaSure. However, the Owls went on to win at the No. 2 and No. 1 slots to earn the doubles point.
Upstate evened things up at 1-1 as Beeler picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Tamara Plocher at No. 5 singles. The Owls answered back at No. 3 singles as Alexandra Apostu defeated Upstate's Talia Rojas 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.
KSU claimed its second singles win of the day at the No. 2 spot as Jana Hueckinghaus earned a three set victory over Kuerten 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. The Spartans wouldn't go away quietly though as Julie Bell fought for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, beating Kennesaw State's Isabela Castro.
A KSU win at the No. 1 singles clinched the match for the Owls as Virginie Stein came from behind to defeat Isabel von Stryk 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Taylor Cohen went on to recorded the third win on the day for the Spartans with a 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-0 victory at No. 4 singles over Lagerkvist.
