MACON, Ga. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team ended the regular season in style Saturday afternoon, picking up a 5-2 victory at Mercer University in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The Spartans (13-7, 5-3 A-Sun) clinch the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Tennis Championship and will face No. 6 seed Kennesaw State in the opening round. The 2013 A-Sun Championship will take place in Johnson City, Tenn., on the campus of ETSU. First round matches will take place Friday, April 19 at the ETSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans were dominate once again in doubles action, picking up victories in all three matches to claim the doubles point. Taylor Cohen and Julie picked up a thrilling 8-7 (7-4) victory at the top of the lineup, while Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas grabbed an 8-2 victory and Allison Beeler and Constanze Kuerten turned in an impressive 8-0 showing at No. 3 doubles.
The Spartans quickly decided the match by picking up three singles victories. Cohen earned the first singles point with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 slot, while von Stryk followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot. Bell clinched the match at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
Despite winning the match with ease, Beeler still cruised at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-1, while Mercer picked up its only points of the day at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
Upstate's appearance in this weekend's A-Sun Championship will be the first in program history.
