SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's tennis team celebrated Senior Day and Faculty Appreciation Day, shutting out Northern Kentucky 7-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference action Friday at the Upstate Tennis Complex.
The Spartans (11-5, 3-2 A-Sun) opened the day recognizing a pair of seniors in Julie Bell and Allison Beeler, before sweeping the Norse (0-12, 0-5 A-Sun) in doubles play. This marked the third straight match Upstate has won the doubles point.
Beeler and Constanze Kuerten downed NKU's Jamie Diaz and Kristina Abramovich 8-2 at No. 3 doubles, while Bell and Sarah Vande Berg clinched the doubles point for Upstate with an 8-3 victory in the No. 2 slot against Shana Kleynen and Marta Romeo. Isabel von Stryk and Talia Rojas swept doubles action for the Spartans, edging Claire Spradlin and Holly Robinson 8-6 on the first court.
The Spartans made quick work of the Norse in singles play. Vande Berg downed Diaz 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot, followed by a pair of 6-0 wins for Bell at No. 5 singles over Abramovich. Beller shut out Robinson at the No. 4 position to decide the match.
Rojas picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Kleynen at No. 3 singles, while von Stryk claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win against Spradlin at No. 1. Kuerten wrapped the day at the second court, earning a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Romeo.
